Divine Souls Beta Review

"The first action MMO that plays like an arcade fighter" - George Vanous

Overview

Divine Souls is a new free-to-play 3D action MMORPG from Outspark.

Filled with fast-paced non-stop action, deadly weapons, diverse combos and a unique skill system, Divine Souls combines several game genres into a steam punk theme. The combat system is reminiscent of Street Fighter but graduated to a full MMO with challenging quests and team play. It is easy to learn, but takes a long time to master.

Story

Divine Souls has wonderful quest introduction video cut scenes with voice-over animations. These quest cut-scenes allow players to dive headlong into the story and develop interest beyond just grinding away at mobs. The story begins to unravel into a deeper theme as you make your way through the first few levels.

The game centers around the Zeplar Drive which caused a paradigm shift in travel throughout the galaxy. The discovery of the Divine Matter made it possible. When Dr. Burke placed a tiny amount of the shimmering liquid into a small engine, his starship was able to travel to the ends of the galaxy. It was hoped that the new technology would bring a new era of peace and trade between the planets. But in time those hopes gave way to despair.

It was learned that the Divine Matter was altering everyone, changing the very existence of the populous. At first, the changes were small. People on different planets started to transform. A few at the beginning, then more and more. Some received new-found abilities and powers. Some started to become something different and darker, losing their humanity along the way.

Classes

There are 3 different main classes in Divine souls, the Fighter (Tank), Slasher (Melee DPS), and Mage (Ranged DPS), Each Class is built to compliment the others.

Fighter

Fighters are grapplers that like to fight up close and personal. Equipped with a technologically advanced and magically infused Power Fist, a Fighter can knock enemies about with ease, or pick them up and drill them into the ground. The Fighter isn’t the fastest class, but they have a good balance between strength, speed, and stamina.

Seth Radin is one of the Divine Souls. Seth’s Power Fist has been injected with some of the sacred Divine Matter, giving his arm an extra boost and making Seth one of the most powerful Divine Souls in the galaxy. Seth’s family was murdered during the first attacks on the planet by the terrorist group Dark Moon, and he joined Polaris so that he could exact revenge on the dangerous group.

Slasher

Slashers are extremely agile and quick on their feet. Slashers wield impressive chain-swords with deadly precision, and are renowned for their relentless study and perfection of sword fighting techniques. Chain-Swords that have been imbued with Divine Matter can be used to pull off massive combos, sometimes hitting enemies more than fifty times in a row.

Kayla is a Slasher from the Grey Flame Mercenaries who joined up with Seth and Polaris to stop Dark Moon. While her motives remain unknown, Kayla’s passion for action and butchery are well documented across the galaxy.

Mage

Most monsters never get the chance to face a Mage in singular combat. Mages are experts at weakening opponents before the fighting even starts. With a variety of ranged attacks, Mages aren’t as fearsome when fighting up close, but they are skilled at hunting and employ powerful area spells to fight off multiple opponents at the same time.

Abigal looks short and sweet, but she carries a big Cannon Staff and knows how to use it. The Four Rings, the powerful council of Mages, believes that those who respect the Divine Matter will reap its powers. When Dark Moon threatened to capture the Divine Matter, the Four Rings sent Abigal to help stop the terrorist organization.

Weapons

PowerFist (Fighter)

The prototype Power Fist was nicknamed “the fist of the gods”, and when combined with the Divine Matter, it could punch through solid granite. With further tuning and honing, the Power Fist became a fearsome weapon for both offense and defense.
Polaris, the organization tasked with protecting the Divine Matter, issues this close quarters combat weapon to the people who join up for the cause.

Chain-Sword (Slasher)

The weapon of choice for the mercenaries of the Grey Flame, the Chain-Sword is a combination of two classic weapons. Infused with the Divine Matter, the Chain-Sword can be used to not only slash enemies, but also to pick them up and slam them into the ground as well.
The Chain-Sword is perfect for mid-ranged combat, and if you ever come up against a member of Grey Flame, it’s best to fight them up close so as not to give them room to unleash the notorious sword’s full potential.

Cannon Staff (Mage)

The Cannon Staff is one of the most unique weapons to be forged with Divine Matter. Because of it’s light weight, the staff can be carried by even the smallest heroes. When attacking from afar, the Cannon Staff can fire off a variety of attacks at enemies. But when the fighting gets close, the Cannon Staff can be expertly wielded for melee combat.
The Cannon Staff is the weapon of choice for members of the Four Rings, the council of Mages. Because the Mages employee many younger magic users in their ranks, the Cannon Staff’s light weight makes it a perfect weapon for a Mage of any age.

Controls

The Controls are very straight forward.

The main keys are “W-A-S”, movement “E”, Hold “F” Dash, “Space”, Jump and of course “left click”, Hit “right click” Guard. Most fighting combinations are made of up a certain number of these functions with the addition of hot keys for items and additional skills and world interaction.

Of all the basic commands "ALT" should be pointed out as being one of the most important, it toggles the mouse pointer and you'll find yourself doing that often to check your inventory, quests, and character information.
